電灯が登場する150年位前まであかりには火が使われてきました。日本では世界的にもめずらしい木と紙を使ったあかりの道具が多用されてきました。行灯や提灯は日本が世界に誇れる伝統的なあかりの道具です。大小様々な形体・形式が存在します。中に油皿を入れた行灯は屋内で使用され、提灯は屋外で使用されました。小田原には小田原提灯と呼ばれる小型の提灯があり、旅人に重宝されました。長い柄が付いた馬上提灯は馬に乗る時に使われました。明治時代に登場した人力車は夜間運行の際にフックが付いた人力車用の提灯を使いました。これは夜間運行の時に人力車の手すり前方に取り付けられ、乗客が乗り降りする時には横に取り付けました。
Until 150 years ago when the electrical illumination came into use,
the fire was the
only light source in artificial lighting. In Japan, they used unique
lighting appliances made of wood and paper material; andon lantern and
chochin
collapsible lantern are the traditional lighting tools.
They come in a variety of sizes and shapes made of wood, bamboo and paper.
Some uses metal such as copper for durability. Andon lanterns were used in
the house with saurcer oil lamps lit
inside while chochin lanterns were used outside the house; the one called Odawara
chochin, a collapsible tiny paper lantern, invented and developed in Odawara,
was widely used by travelers during the Edo Period. Bajo chochine is equipped
with a long flexible handle to be used by a rider on a horse. A special chochin lantern was used
for jinrikisha having a metal hook to be attached
to the handle bar of jinrikisha which was usually hooked in the front after dark
and when a passenger got on and off jinrikisha, it was placed on the side.
あかりの道具の展示室には他にもたんころ、ひょうそく、浮芯灯、臭水灯、篝（カガリ）、ヒデ鉢、松とうがい、ほりこ、短檠（たんけい）、吊灯籠、瓦灯（ガトウ）、龕灯（ガンドウ）、燭台、雪洞、無尽灯、石油ランプ、ガス灯、ランタン、幻燈器、マツダ電球が展示されています。
There are other lighting appliances showcased such as open stand lamps,
float wick lamps, cressets, crusie lamps, candle stands, lanterns, kerosene
lamps, gas lights, tangusten filament lamps.
