　江戸時代の日本では庶民にとって鍵はほとんど必要のないものでした。当時の治安は大変よかったうえに用心する際は心張り棒で戸締りをしていました。平和な時代が続いて、従来の刀鍛冶がやがて錠前師となり、商人の要求に応じて競って立派な錠前を作るようになりました。商人社会に入ると富の蓄積が始まり、次第に商品や富を納める蔵が建並び、それを守るための錠前が重要なものとなっていったのです。

　During the Edo Period, locks were virtually unnecessary to commoners.  Public peace and order were maintained and the commoners simply used sticks to lock their doors if necessary.  The demand for swords decreased and swordsmiths started to produce gorgeous locks to comply with the requests from merchants.  Merchants built warehouses to store merchandise and valuables and locks became important items for them for security.
