Coin boxes
江戸時代に
金銭は銭箱に入れて管理をしました。商人ともなると千両箱や二千両箱を使いました。簡単にこじ開けることができないように分厚い木材で作られており鉄材で補強されていて、鍵で閉じるようになっています。箱そのものも重さがありますので千両もの小判が入れば14kg近くの重さになり簡単に持ち上げることはできません。
During the Edo Period, coins (no bills at that time)
were stored in wooden chests or boxes. Merchants used coin boxes in which
1,000 ryo (gold coins) could be stored. Some could store 2,000 gold coins.
They are made of thick wood and protected with iron strips and rivets and closed
with padlocks. If a box is filled with one thousand gold coins, it weighs
nearly 14kg which cannot easily be lifted.
