蓑（ミノ）・バンドリ
Rain coats and
gear made of straw
お米を取った後の藁は捨てず、縄、むしろ、草鞋を編む材料に使われました。藁は貴重な材料でありました。その昔布団がない時代に庶民は藁の中で寝たといわれています。蓑（ミノ）や荷物を背負うときに背あてに使うバンドリも藁で作られましたが、その編み方や出来栄えは芸術品といってもおかしくありません。藁を使って馬や牛等の人形が作らましたが今では貴重な民芸品になっています。もみ殻も緩衝材に使われたり、松脂ろうそくを作る材料にも使われました。稲は無駄なく使われ、日本人の物を大切にする精神が息づいていることが分かります。
Left over straws, after threshing rice, were
used to make ropes, mats and shoes. Straws were important materials. When cotton futon mats were not
customary, it is said that people slept in piles of straw. Working gears
such as a rain coat, a cushion to carry a heavy load on one's backs, or shoes,
were also made of straw; the way it
is woven is a work of art. Toy horses and cows were also made of straw and
they are now valuable souvenirs. Japanese peasants used rice straws
without waste which represents the efficient recycle society of Edo.
