　江戸の町ではいたるところに井戸があり、町民は井戸水を汲んで調理や洗濯等に使っていました。この井戸水を汲むのに使われたのが井戸桶と滑車です。井戸から水をくみ上げる際に簪（かんざし）などの物を落とすことがあり、それを拾い上げる水熊手と呼ばれる道具が使われました。その形はゲームセンターのUFOキャッチャーのようです。

 In the City of Edo, there were wells everywhere and the people used buckets and pulleys to pick up water from the well for cooking and washing.  Things could be dropped accidentally into a well such hair accessories and in such a case, a special apparatus was used to pick them up from the bottom of a well; a special apparatus called mizukumade was used that worked like a crane game.
