Portable man-powered irrigating wheel
This apparatus used by farmers is a man-powered water
wheel to irrigate water to a rice field. A farmer carried it to a rice
field with a pole and he set the device to a ridge of a rice field by a stream
and stuck a pole to the ground and by holding on to it, he mounted himself on
to the device and turned the wheel with his feet to irrigate water.
Professor E.S.Morse, a zoologist who came to Japan in the Meiji Period, showed an
interest to this device and described it with his sketch in his diary.
