Confectionary molds
Nowadays, it is rarely heard the word
"confectionary mold", though the confectionary molds or cake molds utilized to
make Japanese sweets have a long history. During the Edo Period, the
culture of sweets was developed and a variety of designs of confectionary molds
were produced in numbers; large size rakugan (sugared confection) were sold for
presents or gifts. In the Meiji Period, sugar confection rakugan were
given as gifts or presents at ceremonies such as wedding and for that purpose,
the majority of designs changed to sea bream, crane, tortoise, lobster, pine
tree, lotus flower, seasonal flowers, etc.; some mold designs reflect the period
of time such as clocks or bicycles.
